“Wherever the Gospel is Preached”
“Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.” (Mark 14:9, NIV)
Jesus defended the woman who has poured perfume over the head, from those who criticised and condemned her action.
But Jesus didn’t finish there. He continued to praise what she did with some of the strongest words of affirmation that he ever spoke.
It’s amazing to think that as you read these words, what Jesus said is being fulfilled right now for you.
Why is it that Jesus forever connects what this woman did with the Gospel? He connected it with his death. He said that when she anointed his body with precious oil, she was preparing it for his burial. The Gospel is always about the Cross. The Gospel is always about God’s sacrifice of love for our sakes.
And the sacrifice of love of the Son of God always elicits a sacrifice of love in return. That’s how the Gospel works
Jesus is also teaching us that deeds done in love will live forever. Whatever is narrow-minded and mean-spirited will perish. But love and its deeds are immortal.
The greatest manifestation of love is the Cross, revealed through the Gospel. If you have believed in Jesus, you will not perish, but have everlasting life. You will not be forgotten, but live in glory.
One day, your career achievements will be forgotten, your academic achievements will not be remembered, and no one will remember your possessions. So, what should be your priority?
Reflection: Find a time to walk in nature today, and go through the story of this woman in your mind. Reflect on what about your life that will last forever.
