Tracing the Worldwide Faith Renewal: New Doco Series ‘Encounter’
By: Clare Bruce
Since the early-2000s hype of the ‘New Atheists’ movement went quiet, a renewed interested in spirituality began to take its place in every corner of the globe – and Australia is here for it.
This revival of faith is the subject of a powerful new 10-part documentary series from Olive Tree Media. It explores the revival of Christian faith that’s quietly taking place internationally and in Australia, featuring real stories of life-changing encounters with Jesus.
The series, titled Encounter, is hosted by well-known Christian communicator Karl Faase. In pre-production for the series, Karl and his team met with faith leaders around the globe to hear about the trend they are seeing: a new spiritual openness, a deep hunger for meaning, and a rebirth of belief in God.

Biblical and Contemporary Encounters with Jesus
In each of the 10 episodes of Encounter, viewers get to revisit Biblical stories of some of the amazing Jesus-encounters found in the gospels; as well as meeting with contemporary believers who have encountered Jesus in very real and personal ways. The series takes viewers from Australia to Africa, from the UK to the USA, and beyond.
“People are searching, they’re ready to believe in something,” Karl said. “Jesus offers a compelling, life-giving path – one that deserves to be considered on its own merits, free from the complications the modern Church faces.”
Key contributors to the series include Pete Greg, Justin Brierley, Michael Bird, Lynn Cohick and Sheridan Voysey, making up a diverse group of voices ranging from theologians and pastors to cultural commentators and those who have had their own divine encounters.
Karl said Encounter is designed for believers and non-believers alike: “This series isn’t just for Christians; it’s a perfect opportunity for Australian churches and Christians to invite friends and family to explore Christianity in a fresh, accessible way.”
Encounter seeks to cut through the noise of modern church controversies to present the powerful simplicity of Jesus’ message of love, forgiveness and salvation.
